Klag is a free, open-source Kafka consumer lag exporter that goes beyond basic lag counts with lag velocity, hot-partition detection, and alerts before lag exceeds a topic's data retention window, scaling to thousands of consumer groups in about 50MB of memory. It exports to Prometheus, Datadog, or OTLP and includes an opt-in MCP endpoint for AI agents. It's aimed at platform and SRE teams running Kafka who need early warning before consumer lag causes real data loss.
