Confidential Document Bins

Confidential document bins in Weill Cornell Medicine spaces are designated for confidential documents only. Material placed in the confidential bins undergoes a special shredding procedure with an external hauler, which is more expensive than regular recycling. Extra costs are incurred if objects such as clips, staples, and binding spirals cause the shredder to jam and require maintenance. Accepted items: confidential documents containing patient-protected health information (PHI) or other private/intellectual/confidential information that should be shredded. Not accepted: any object that is not paper (clips, staples, binding spirals must be removed), non-confidential documents/papers, journals, magazines, cardboard boxes (these belong in regular recycling), and tissues/napkins (these belong in the trash). A downloadable sign (sign_for_confidential_paper_contamination.pdf) is available. NYP Hospital spaces use a different approach where all paper is shredded and recycled and bins are labeled “Shred-It.”
